Message from the Chairman on COVID-19
The current pace of events and change is breathtaking. Every day we rise to news of yet another challenge. Simultaneously, those of us who are directed to "shelter in place" are reminded of the myriad number of small things that make life worth living. Even as calamity appears on the horizon, many among us are more mindful, more sensitive and caring, reminded once again that we do not live in isolation from one another but instead comprise a community.
Friends, shop for a senior who lives next door. Medicines are picked up. "How can I help" resumes its rightful place in our conversations. Music, pets, and the bloom of the spring's flowers beckon to us to slow down, to observe and to savor their place in our lives.
Still others are facing economic ruin. Jobs are lost. Income disappears. Moving through this crisis will require our creativity, new ways of thinking will emerge, plans meant to ease the economic pain will reach fruition. Those of us here at the County spend every day thinking of how we can help. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions. We are all in this together. With patience and diligence, I believe we will emerge from this crisis and once again set our sights on new horizons.
May those horizons lead us back to the bedrock of family and faith and friendship. Re-discovery is a remarkable journey. With courage and resolve we will find a way to move forward on that path to see what the future holds.
I do hope everyone will take a moment to reflect on the gravity of this situation. Lives are at stake. It's clear that initial attempts to simply dismiss this challenge out of hand were sadly mistaken and misguided. Everyone must do their part. From the young to the old we can each do what should be done: practice social distancing, wash your hands, and remember that you can best take care of your own family by caring for the family next door.
