New Grant to Improve Child Passenger Safety in Yolo County

Post Date:11/06/2018 2:12 PM

Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – The Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency has been awarded a $150,000 one-year grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The grant will fund child passenger safety education and training programs aimed at helping parents and caretakers make sure their child is riding safely.

The grant focuses on child passenger safety and ensuring that infant and child safety seats (also known as car seats) are installed and used properly. This grant aims to reduce the risk of injury in Yolo County children, ages 0 to 8, when traveling in a vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a correctly used car seat can reduce fatality risk by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers in passenger vehicles.

Car crashes remain the leading cause of death for children. Car seats save lives by reducing the risk of injury or death. Activities funded by this grant will include community education and car seat check events, individual car seat checks (by appointment), a limited number of low-cost car seats made available to families in need, and promotion of safety seat recycling and the importance of discarding used and expired car seats.

“Children are our future, and it is important that parents and caretakers keep children safe by using the right car seat and installing it correctly,” said OTS Director Rhonda Craft. “Funding for child passenger safety education and training is critical to ensuring children are as safe as possible in vehicles.”
