Yolo Reads Annual Celebration on September 22
(Woodland, CA) – Yolo County’s Adult and Family Literacy Program, Yolo Reads, is having its annual celebration on Saturday, September 22, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Children’s Activity Room of the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 E. 14th Street in Davis.
This event celebrates the accomplishments of adult learners who have reached their literacy goals or improved their skills through the assistance of volunteer tutors. All are welcome to attend and learn more about the program, enjoy light refreshments, and hear inspirational stories.
“I learned about the Yolo Reads program and English conversation groups at the Davis library,” said one adult learner. “I have had an opportunity to learn English and learn about the [local] culture through being connected with my Yolo Reads Tutor. [My] tutor encouraged me to continue my education by signing up for community college classes.”
Yolo Reads trains and connects volunteer tutors to adult learners wishing to improve their literacy skills. There are currently more than 50 pairs of adult learners and volunteer tutors. The program is supported by generous volunteers throughout Yolo County, although additional volunteer tutors are needed in the more rural areas.
The Yolo Reads program is funded by the Yolo County Library, the California State Library Literacy Services, Friends of the Library groups, and private businesses in the community.
This event is free to attend and no reservations are required. The Children’s Activity Room of the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library is accessible for persons with disabilities.
