Volunteers Needed for Yolo Reads
(Woodland, CA) – Become an advocate for literacy! The Yolo Reads Adult and Family Literacy Program is in need of volunteers to serve as tutors in Esparto. The program, hosted through the Yolo County Library, has been awarded a grant to provide a free basic life-skills ESL (English as a Second Language) course to adults starting September 7 at the Esparto Regional Library. The course will be taught by an ESL instructor and will be offered once a week on Friday evenings for ten weeks.
Yolo Reads tutors will assist the ESL instructor by helping participants improve their grammar, vocabulary, conversation, and confidence in a comfortable classroom environment or on a one-to-one basis. No experience is necessary to volunteer, orientation is provided, and the commitment is two hours a week.
Through Yolo Reads programs, tutors have reported significant gains in the ability of learners to help their children succeed in school and achieve early literacy skills. “My learner is finally truly reading . . . and I am very proud of him,” said a Yolo Reads tutor. “I really appreciate the effort he’s putting in to be able to read to his granddaughter.”
To volunteer as a tutor or to receive more information regarding the program, call Yolo Reads at 530-666-8019 or e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org.
