Grants Improve Roadway User Safety in Yolo County

Post Date:11/29/2017 8:45 AM

Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – The Yolo County Health & Human Services Agency has been awarded two one-year California Office of Traffic Safety grants, totaling $215,000, to help improve roadway user safety.

The first grant focuses on child passenger safety and ensuring that infant and child safety seats (also known as car seats) are installed and used properly. This grant aims to reduce the risk of injury to Yolo County children ages 0 to 8 when travelling in a vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a correctly used car seat can reduce fatality risk by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers in passenger vehicles. Activities funded by this grant will include community education and car seat check events, individual car seat checks (by appointment), and a limited number of low-cost car seats for families in need.

The second grant focuses on providing bike and pedestrian safety knowledge and resources to Yolo County adults with an emphasis on reaching older adults and Spanish speaking communities. Activities funded by this grant will include education programs that teach bike and pedestrian safety skills, participation in community events to share information about bike and pedestrian safety, and bike helmet distribution and helmet fitting education. Between 2013 and 2015, the injury/fatality rate of collisions that involved a pedestrian or bicyclist in Yolo County was between 12 and 17.3 percent. This grant aims to reduce those rates through educational programs.

To learn more about these programs, contact Steven Jensen at for information about the child passenger safety program and Rebecca Tryon at for information about the bike and pedestrian safety program.
