Press Release

Worm Composting Class on November 23

(Woodland, CA) – Interested in learning how to turn your kitchen scraps into high-quality compost for your garden soil? The Hanna and Herbert Bauer Memorial Community Garden is hosting a free worm composting class on Saturday, November 23 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., located at 137 N. Cottonwood Street in Woodland, behind the Bauer Building.

In this hands-on class, participants will learn how to set up and maintain a simple small-scale worm composting system with the goal of creating a nutrient-rich soil amendment to help their fruits and vegetables grow well. The class will be taught by UC Master Gardener of Yolo County Steve Radosevich, who will be giving away worms to participants. The City of Woodland will also distribute free countertop compost buckets and provide information on their compost bin rebate program, where  residents can be reimbursed $100 for the purchase of a backyard compost or worm compost bin.  This is a great opportunity for garden enthusiasts to discover the magic of worm composting and have questions answered.

Pre-registration is required by November 22 for the class.  To register, contact David Linebarger at (530) 666-8429 or david.linebarger@yolocounty.org. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather as the class will take place outside in the garden.  In the event of steady rain, the class will be postponed or cancelled.

The Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency is committed to providing education that can help residents eat fresh fruits and vegetables and live healthier lives and offers free classes throughout the year at the Community Garden. Participants can learn about garden activities and classes at: www.yolocounty.org/garden.  For more information about the City of Woodland’s compost bin rebate program visit: http://www.cityofwoodland.org/706/Compost-Bin-Vermicompost-Bin-Rebates.
