Press Release

Yolo County Library’s 2019 Summer Reading Program a Success!

(Woodland, CA) – Yolo County Library has wrapped up another successful Summer Reading Program with participants reading a total of 52,290 books, 14,226 days, and 12,564 hours between May 20 and September 30.  Participation grew across all age groups this year with a 37% increase in sign-ups and a 35% increase in finishers.

Participants who completed the program by reading 10 books, reading for 10 hours or reading over 10 days, received a free book of their choice, resulting in 6,223 books being given away.  In a post survey of the program, participants said their favorite part was “the free book” and “reading for fun” was a close second.  The survey also showed that 82% of participants read more often because of the program and 88% learned something new.  One participant said, “It was really a great way to get me reading again.”

Participants of all ages were entertained and enlightened at events held throughout the county, including a summer concert series headlined by the Element Brass Band; magic shows by Magical Nathaniel, Mike’s Magic Show, and Jon Lopez; presentations by Uncle Jer’s Traveling Bee Show and Circus of Smiles; and slime-making.  In addition, children and teens in Clarksburg and West Sacramento received free nutritious meals while engaging in fun library programs, due to the Lunch at the Library project of the California Library Association, supported by the California State Library with funds from the State of California.

“Yolo County Library’s Summer Reading Program benefits the community in many ways,” noted Yolo County Librarian Mark Fink.  “When parents and caregivers participate in the Summer Reading Program together with their children, this behavior reinforces the importance of reading.  The program also helps young children develop and retain creative and critical thinking skills when school is not in session.”

The Summer Reading Program would not be as successful without support from donors.  The Yolo County Library thanks the seven Friends of the Library organizations and the following business for their support: Bizarro World, California State Railroad Museum, Capitol Bowl, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Crocker Art Museum, Fairytale Town, Joe’s Crab Shack, Ken’s Bike-Ski-Board, Lamppost Pizza, LEGOLAND California Resort, The Mustard Seed, Nugget Markets, Rocknasium, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Round Table Pizza, Sacramento History Museum, Sal’s Tacos, and Super Owl Brewing.

The Summer Reading Program is a project of the California Library Association and part of California’s statewide summer reading outcomes and is sponsored by the various Friends of the Library groups.  For more information, visit your local Yolo County Library branch or visit: www.yolocountylibrary.org.  Connect with the Yolo County Library on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/yolocountylibrary.org or Instagram at: www.instagram.com/yolocountylibrary/.
