(Woodland, CA) – Yolo County Library is celebrating canine companions by hosting a free, fun and educational Dog Day Afternoon with adoptions, agility events, crafts, documentary viewing, and mini lectures on October 19 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 E. 14th Street in Davis.

Participating local affiliations and organizations include: Davis Dog Training Club (agility), Yolo County SPCA (adoptions), and Davis Origami Group (crafts). Informational tables will be hosted by Davis Puppy Raising Club (Yolo Guide Dogs), and participating local businesses: Petco, Western Feed, Davis Ace Garden and Pet, and Pet Food Express.  Leashed pets will be able to enjoy the fun activities outside but only service animals will be allowed inside the branch.

In addition, participants will be able to listen and learn from the following guest speakers:

  • Lynn Hendricks (Beloved Pet Mobile Vet): “They are Just Growing Old” at 2:15 p.m.
  • Emma Grigg (Lecturer and Research Associate at UC Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine): “How to Speak Dog” at 3:15 p.m.
  • Lynette Hart (Lecturer and Research Associate at UC Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine) & Ben Hart (Professor Emeritus and Director of the Center for Animal Behavior): “Long-Term Effects of Spay/Neuter on Dogs” at 4:15 p.m.

Cap off the day with a heartwarming dog-umentary that follows five spirited pups in their quest to become guide dogs for the blind. Film screenings begin at 2:00 p.m. See yolocountylibrary.org for title.

The branch will also be collecting donations, such as towels, blankets, toys, collars, leashes, beds, and treats, for Yolo SPCA until the day of the event.  This program is free to attend no reservation is required, and sponsored by the Friends of the Davis Public Library.   For more information about the Yolo County Library, visit our website at: www.yolocountylibrary.org or connect with us on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/yolocountylibrary.org
