Press Release

Open a World of Infinite Possibilities with a Library Card

(Woodland, CA) – This September, the Yolo County Library is joining the American Library Association and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month, which reminds every community member that a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children and studies show children who are read to in the home and use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifelong learning.  A Yolo County Library card opens a world of infinite possibilities through resources and services that give students the tools to succeed in school and beyond. Children in Yolo County now have even more incentive to get a library card as late fines for youth under age 18 have been eliminated.

In addition to print resources, Yolo County Library cardholders have access to downloadable e-books, e-audiobooks and e-magazines; materials in multiple languages; research databases and online learning tools; free and discounted museum passes; technology such as 3D printers, wireless hot spots and virtual reality equipment; and specialty checkouts including themed Storytime and School Readiness sets, Read Around Yolo book bags for book clubs, and Discovery kits - multi-resource packs on topics such as bird watching, meditation, sewing, wood crafting, and even a telescope for budding astronomers.

Yolo County Library offers free, fun and educational programs and activities for all ages, from youth-focused programs such as storytimes in English, Spanish, Chinese and Russian; LEGO™ block parties; STEAM-based activities; and homework help and after-school programs; to teen clubs and advisory groups; family events like the Aguas Frescas arts and crafts programs and movie screenings; and adult enrichment activities, like English conversation groups; book discussion groups; and gardening workshops from UC Master Gardeners; the library brings families and communities together.

“Our library branches are thriving, bustling centers that offer something for everyone,” says Yolo County Librarian Mark Fink. “Sign up for a library card this September and get access to ideas that inform, entertain, and inspire.”

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year.
