What is Foster Care?

Each year millions of children will experience family problems so severe that temporary removal from their homes will be necessary for their safety and well-being.

Foster parents are individuals and couples who take other people's children into their homes. Foster parents guide and shelter children until they can return to their homes, find permanent families through adoption or, in the case of teenagers, until they are capable of living independently.

Who are Foster Children?

Foster children come in all ages, ranging from babies to 18-year-olds. Some children have handicaps, physical, mental or emotional, and others do not. Some children will stay with you a long time and others, such as babies awaiting adoption, a short time.

We ask you to state your preference for the kind of child you would like to care for in your home. However, the more flexible you are, the better chance we have of finding a home for the child who needs you.

What do we look for in a Foster Parent?

There are some basic requirements that our foster parents should meet:

1. An unchanged marital status over the past year, whether it is married, single or living together.
2. At least 18 years of age.
3. No major illness or trauma in your life during the past year.
4. Emotional, physical, financial stability and without conviction of a major crime.
5. Day-care arrangements, if fostering a pre-schooler is desired.
6. A crib or bed for each child, but two children can share a room.
7. Attendance at the required orientation sessions.
8. All family members interested in fostering.

Applying to be a Foster Parent

Orientation, which is provided by Foster & Kinship Care Education Program, will give you a better idea of what to expect from us, yourself and the children. If you think fostering is for you, we invite you to apply.

The approval process takes time- one to two months from the time you attend orientation. One important step is the visit the licensing worker makes to your home to meet and talk with your entire family.

Once your home is approved, we will try to find a child that will be comfortable with your family.

What kind of support can you expect?

A foster parent licensing social worker to assist you with any problems you may have.
Medical and dental costs for the child covered by Medi-Cal.
A daily rate provided for the child’s room and board and clothing expenses.
Training provided by the local community college, Woodland Community College.
Free CPR/First Aid instruction.

For the past several years we have been organizing and presenting family holiday events. This enables the children in our care to celebrate the holidays with other foster children and their siblings in a joyful atmosphere.

We have organized a clothing program and supplies closet to provide foster children with emergency clothes and infant supplies when the need arises.
