Pandemic Influenza

A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus (1) emerges for which there is little or no immunity in the human population, (2) begins to cause illness and, (3) spreads easily person-to-person worldwide.

The H1N1 flu (swine flu) meets all criteria for a pandemic. We are currently at WHO Pandemic Alert Phase 6 (pandemic underway).
