Davis Branch Library Renovations Underway

(Woodland, CA) – Thanks to the successful passage of Measure P – overwhelmingly supported by Davis voters in 2007 – which increased the parcel tax that funds expanded library services, programs and facilities in Davis, the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library is receiving a much needed facelift. The project includes complete renovation of the interior, an expansion that will increase the collection size, improved shelving layouts and the overhaul of the heating and air conditioning system.

“Once complete, the building will have new furnishings and an enhanced interior design with energy-efficient lighting and improved book handling,” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong. “The project will include more space for children’s programming, an enhanced young adult area, an additional meeting room for community use, more computer workstations, and inviting and welcoming reading areas.”

The Yolo County Board of Supervisors recently approved a contract for the renovation and expansion of the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library. JDS Builders Group, Inc., a Winters-based contractor specializing in commercial and office buildings, was awarded the $2,799,998 contract for the project, scheduled to be completed in October 2010. JDS Builders is currently completing expansion and modernization of a mobile home park on East Street in Woodland and previously built the Woodland Court Street fire station.

“The Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library serves more than 400,000 visitors and circulates over 1.2 million items each year,” said Helen M. Thomson, Yolo County Supervisor and recent recipient of the California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners award for outstanding support or promotion for legislation to benefit libraries and library services. “The Davis branch library is obviously well-loved and well-used, and greatly in need of this facelift. The community is excited to watch the renovation process and eager to move into the new library when it is complete.”

During the renovation, the Davis branch library has moved to 2801 Second Street (entrance on Peña Drive) with the same convenient hours. For more visit www.yolocountylibrary.org or call (530) 757-5593.
