Empowered Communities Promote Quality of Life
Healthy Yolo is a collaborative participatory approach that intends to engage and mobilize the community so they may have a voice in addressing public health issues and ultimately improve the quality of life for all in Yolo County.
Healthy Yolo is a process where community members come together to create a common vision of a healthy community, share and understand the specific concerns and strengths of our community, prioritize public health issues, and determine goals and strategies to achieve a healthier Yolo County.
Healthy Yolo will replicate the Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) model for use in community health improvement. Learn more about the MAPP model.
Health and Wellbeing
Healthy Yolo focuses on prevention and health and wellness. Health is often defined exclusively by the absence of sickness and disease. However, we believe that health is much broader and that it incorporates physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Health is affected by a wide range of factors that include genetics, behavior, social and economic circumstances, clinical care, and physical environment.
Community health is the product of these factors interacting in complex ways with each other and varying in their impact depending upon individual traits and circumstances. Understanding these factors and how they influence health is critical to efforts aimed at improving the health of our community.
Healthy Yolo in the Community
During the summer of 2013, visioning sessions will be held throughout Yolo County. This process will guide the community through a collaborative and creative process that leads to a shared vision and common values of a healthy Yolo County.
From July 2013 through December 2013, Healthy Yolo will conduct four community assessments:
- Community Themes and Strengths
- Community Health Status
- Local Public Health System
- Forces of Change
Based on the findings of the assessments, Healthy Yolo will help communities prioritize public health issues, develop goals and strategies, identify resources, and take action.
Healthy Yolo will develop and implement a community-wide strategic plan for public health improvement in Yolo County.
