Davis Library (E. 14th Library Facility) Renovation

Thanks to Measure P – overwhelmingly passed by Davis voters in 2007 – which increased the parcel tax that funds expanded library services, programs and facilities in Davis, the Mary L. Stephens Branch Library, located on E. 14th Street in Davis will be undergoing much needed renovations between September 2009 and the second half of 2010).

Upgrades in the Davis public library building will include all things promised in Measure P, including enhanced services, furniture, technology and staffing. The renovation will feature an expanded children’s space, an additional meeting room, four new self-check machines, more materials, new furnishings, better use of day lighting and other green efforts, and an automated return handling system which will process the 1 million circulating and returned items that staff now process by hand. Improvements in technology and additional new and replacement computers will mean faster response times and shorter waits.

During the Renovation

The Davis branch library will be operating out of a temporary location at 2801 Second Street (former home of the Davis Indoor Sports Center (DISC) and current home of Explorit Science Center). The temporary location is necessary to accommodate the library program while the Davis branch library facility on E. 14th Street is being renovated. The library will reopen at the Second Street location resuming the normal schedule.

The Move (August 15-September 8) to the 2801 Second Street Facility

"Moving the Davis branch library to 2801 Second Street was a Herculean effort, with the numers of those involved too many to property thank" said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong.  "I am so very grateful to Library staff, other key county contributors, the Board of Supervisors, long-time supporters of the Davis Library and the community at large for their patience and support in this time of transition."

The Mary L. Stephens Branch Library is re-opening at 2801 Second Street (entrance on Pena Drive) on September 8 at 10:00 a.m.  The temporary location is necessary to accommodate the library program while the Davis branch library facility on E. 14th Street is renovated over the next 12 months.

The temporary Second Street library will share the building, and its ample parking, currently used by Explorit Science Center. The entrance to the temporary library facility will be off of Peña Drive. Bike racks are available and the closest bus route to the Second Street facility is the Unitrans A-Line, which stops on 5th Street between the Police Station and Peña Drive.

The 2801 Second Street library will contain library materials, public computers and furniture relocated from the East 14th Street facility. Wireless Internet access will also be available. The Friends of the Davis Library sale area will be consolidated along with workstations and computers.

The Second Street facility will not have public meeting rooms. Options for meeting and library programming services are being explored. Children’s story time activities take place in the children's area of the library.
