In May 2003, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors gave direction to begin the process of updating the county’s General Plan – the basic document used by local government in land use planning. It provides the comprehensive long-term plan for the physical development of the county, and is often referred to as “the constitution” of the county. This is only the third time in the county’s history that the General Plan has been comprehensively updated. While the fundamental land use goals of promoting agriculture and directing urban growth to the cities have not changed, circumstances facing the county have changed. This update allows the county to examine these changes and resulting issues and chart a course for the future.
