The Yolo County Conservation Program is a cooperative effort lead and managed by the Probation Department designed to provide an alternative to out-of-home placement for youth in trouble. Each five month program session provides an intensive work/education environment with a goal of redirecting youth towards a healthy, law abiding lifestyle to become contributing members of society.
Partners include: Yolo County Office of Education; Yolo County Department of Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Services; and Northern California Construction and Training, Inc. (NCCT), a non profit community based organization.
Due to a minor’s delinquency and overall situation the Court is sometimes required to place the minor out of the parental home into a structured residential treatment facility. This is only done if resources in the local community have been exhausted or are otherwise inadequate to address the needs of the minor in preventing future illegal activity. Residential placements can cost the taxpayer $5,000-$9,000 per month per minor.
The YCCP program is directly aimed at preventing these placements, proving cost effective both in the short and long run. As noted, without this program, most youth would likely be placed into residential treatment or a locked setting. Public safety is not compromised due to the intensive involvement of the Probation Officer.
