Two-Part Garden Class on Tomato Preservation Celebrates Farm to Fork Month
(Woodland, CA) – September is Farm to Fork month, and the Hanna and Herbert Bauer Memorial Community Garden in Woodland is celebrating with a free, two-part garden class series on tomato preservation. These classes will provide education on basic tomato canning, dehydration and freezing for anyone interested in learning how to preserve their own home grown tomatoes. The classes will be held on Wednesday, September 12 and Wednesday, September 19 from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
These classes will be taught by University of California Cooperative Extension Master Food Preservers of Yolo and Solano Counties. The first class will focus on home tomato canning, covering basic methods for canning plain tomatoes, as well as sauce and salsa canning. The second class will focus on tomato dehydration and freezing.
The Sacramento region is known as the Farm to Fork capital of the country and Yolo County is known world-wide as a leader in tomato production. These classes offer Yolo County residents an opportunity to enhance their ability to consume local, fresh produce by gaining skills and knowledge that make home gardening and food preparation fun and easy.
These classes are free for all as part of the Yolo County Health & Human Services Agency’s commitment to provide education and resources that help residents eat fresh fruits and vegetables and live healthier lives. No gardening experience is necessary to participate and all are welcome to attend. Classes are offered for free throughout the year at the Hanna and Herbert Bauer Memorial Garden.
