June 3 Juneteenth Celebration in Davis Promises Great Performances and a Special Treat for Black Panther Fans
(Woodland, CA) – Join the Yolo County Library, the Culture C.O.-O.P., the Friends of the Davis Public Library, and the City of Davis at the beloved Juneteenth Celebration. The event will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 3rd at a new venue, the Davis Senior Center, located at 646 A Street in Davis, California. Juneteenth is family-friendly and fun, with a variety of vendors, an education-packed line up of live entertainment, activities, and delicious food! Food service and artisan vendor sales begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. All attendees are encouraged to bring a dessert to share.
Juneteenth derives its history from the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation by the Union army in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 and is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. “Rise – Organize – Activate – Realize,” was selected as this year’s theme to inspire members of our community to think critically about the world we live in, to understand the importance that all voices are heard, and that we all need to stand up united to make a difference. “It is a call-to-action ceremony to remind members of our diverse community that we must celebrate each other and work together in order to create positive social change,” said Yolo County Library Regional Manager, Scott Love.
This year’s show promises to be the best to date, with headliners including violinist Kippy Marks and singer/actor Charlo Crossley starting off the day at 1:00 p.m. Crossley was a member of the Tony Award-winning Broadway cast of Jesus Christ Superstar, has worked with music icons such as Bette Midler, Luther Vandross, and Chaka Khan, and appeared on the big screen in numerous films, including the Academy and Grammy Award-winning documentary, “20 Feet From Stardom.” Crossley released her album “Live at the Gardenia” in 2014 and enjoys being back on the music circuit.
Kippy Marks is a powerhouse of an entertainer and a rising star in the entertainment industry and community. Marks’ unforgettable compositions draw from classical, jazz, blues, dance and even Middle Eastern and Eastern European traditions. Marks has been internationally recognized for his work and has released nine recordings under Kima Exclusive Entertainment. Each recording represents the artist’s journey through years of being in the industry, experiencing life, and contributing to the music community with a strong emphasis on his local community.
For superhero fans, a Black Panther fashion show will be performed by JTL Productions, who have designed a number of outfits inspired by the clothing worn by the Wakandans in the recent hit movie. Keith Turk’s dancers will be performing Wakanda-inspired dancing with a large troop of performers. A variety of other performances will also be featured, including youth groups not to be missed.
If you are interested in volunteering to help at the celebration or would like to perform or be a vendor, please contact Sandy Holman at (530) 902-4534 or email@example.com, or visit www.yolojuneteenth.org. Tax-deductible donations can be made on the website or by sending a check to the Friends of the Davis Public Library, P.O. Box 91, Davis, CA 95617. The event is a grassroots community effort – everyone has an opportunity to give back and celebrate!
The event is sponsored in part by Friends of the Davis Public Library, the Culture C.O.-O.P., a grant from the City of Davis Arts & Cultural Affairs program, UC Davis Campus of Community Relations, Travis Credit Union, First Northern Bank, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, the Davis Food CO-OP, and Nugget Markets.
