Difference Maker - Cristina Ruiz
Recognized by: Yolo County Library Staff
Cristina Ruiz, a library assistant at the West Sacramento's Arthur Turner Community Library branch, provides public services and children’s storytime, including Mother Goose on the Loose. Cristina is an ardent and enthusiastic staff member who goes above and beyond to improve our library services to all patrons. Since spring 2017, Cristina is one of the core staff members to develop the adaptive learning kits, sensory backpacks, and multi-sensory storytime curriculum.
The Adaptive Learning Kit is an interactive kit for caregivers, parents and families to assist young children that are differently abled in developing awareness, daily living skills as well as early literacy skills and a lifelong love of learning. Adaptive Learning Kits and Sensory Backpacks were developed to bring library resources out of the library and into daycares, child development centers and homes with young children. Having programs and kits for kids to take home like this is concurrently helping spread awareness for Autism, Epilepsy, Sensory Processing Disorders, and more.
As Cristina said: “creating a universal environment is the best thing anyone can do for people that are differently abled. I just want to make sure everyone has an equal opportunity to learn in the way that best fits them while at the same time spreading awareness by educating others the best way I can.”
We are so proud of Cristina for her diligent work on developing adaptive learning kits, sensory backpacks, and multi-sensory storytime.
