Summer Reading Returns to the Yolo County Library May 26

Post Date:05/15/2017 2:48 PM

Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – Join the Yolo County Library’s annual Summer Reading Program from May 26 through August 19. Each of the eight library branches will celebrate this year’s theme, Reading by Design, by hosting programs that include reading incentives for children, teens, and adults. All are welcome to sign up online or in person at their local Yolo County Library branch.

The Library will host a kick-off event for the Summer Reading Program at the Sacramento River Cats game on Friday, May 26. Community members can purchase tickets to the game by going online to: https://tinyurl.com/m3blxpd and using the Promo Code: YOLO17. Attendees can sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the game, receive special incentives, and sit in a designated Yolo County Library section. A percentage of the proceeds from ticket sales for these seats, as well as half of the raffle proceeds, will be donated to the library.

All participants who sign up for the Summer Reading Program will receive a free gift and those who read for 10 hours in 15 minute increments will receive a free book and tickets for prize drawings. Children ages 0-12 will also receive a free pizza coupon to Round Table Pizza. In addition, there will be plenty of opportunities to earn more tickets by doing additional reading or completing further activities.

This year’s theme, Reading by Design, is inspired by the creativity of authors, illustrators, builders, inventors, artists, architects, and everyone who makes our world a more interesting, livable, accessible, and beautiful place. Participants of all ages can expect a wide variety of activities that encourage them to explore their own creativity, including programs from local attractions such as the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento Children’s Museum, and Explorit, along with wildlife shows and regional performers including magicians and musicians.

“The Summer Reading Program supports student success by reducing the achievement gap,” said Youth Innovation Coordinator Vaile Fujikawa. “National research finds that students who participate in public library summer reading programs scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year than those who did not participate. Self-selection, access to books, and sharing books, all key elements of summer reading programs, are also essential factors in reading motivation.”

In summer of 2016, over 8,000 Californians signed up for a public library summer reading program and more than 1.5 million Californians attended summer reading events and activities. The Yolo County Library joins libraries across the nation and state of California to encourage adults, youth and families to read over the summer. The Summer Reading Program is a project of the California Library Association and part of California’s statewide summer reading outcomes.

The Summer Reading Program is free and sponsored by the various Friends of the Library groups and local donors. For more information or to sign up, visit your local Yolo County Library branch or: www.yolocountylibrary.org.
