District Attorney Reisig Awarded Calvin Handy Leadership Award
UC Davis honors Reisig for countywide leadership on diversity
(Woodland, CA) – The University of California, Davis has honored Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig with the 2014 Calvin E. Handy Leadership Award.
In 2005, in an effort to honor Chief Emeritus Calvin E. Handy’s service to the UC Davis community as chief of the UC Davis Police Department from 1993 until 2005, and to continue his legacy of public service leadership, members of the campus community developed the Calvin E. Handy Leadership Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual community member, a group or organization that, through leadership actions, has made significant contributions in promoting leadership through diversity.
On June 12, UC Davis Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph Hextor, along with Chief Emeritus Calvin Handy, presented Reisig with the award at the “Soaring to New Heights” luncheon. Reisig was commended for his leadership in starting the Neighborhood Court program in the City of Davis and on the UC Davis campus.
Neighborhood Court is a restorative justice based program for low level offenders, and is only the second program of its type in the state of California. Other programs of note which Reisig has initiated include the Multi-Cultural Community Council (MCCC) and the Citizens’ Academy. Reisig started the MCCC to enrich understanding of Yolo County’s diverse population and to celebrate how cultural knowledge expands our ability to accept and appreciate differences. Reisig’s District Attorney Citizens’ Academy is an eight week course designed to involve diverse communities in participating in mutual learning about the criminal justice system.
Associate Executive Vice Chancellor Rahim Reed notified Reisig of the honor stating, “On behalf of the University of California, Davis, I congratulate you and sincerely thank you for all your efforts.”
