Northern California Construction Training Opens Its Doors in Woodland

Post Date:05/08/2014 9:41 AM

Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – Northern California Construction Training (NCCT) has opened its doors in Woodland, thanks to recent funding from the Yolo County Board of Supervisors. Citing the correlation between lack of employment and a high risk for re-offense within the criminal justice population, the Board of Supervisors voted to support bringing NCCT to Woodland to enhance local efforts to break the cycle of recidivism.

Located at the Yolo County Fairgrounds, NCCT is a non-profit, community-based pre-apprenticeship program that teaches and mentors students, enabling them to successfully transition to careers in construction. The NCCT curriculum includes classroom work and hands-on building experience, including help in obtaining a driver's license and GED if necessary. Participants are taught by credentialed teacher-trainers who are master carpenters with years of experience.

“We are impressed with NCCT’s history of success in linking people from all backgrounds with employment, and we are hopeful for that same success here in Woodland,” said Yolo County Board of Supervisors Chair Don Saylor.

Anyone with a desire to complete the program is welcome. Enrollment is year round and open to all. When ready, NCCT will help participants obtain a paid apprenticeship position in one of 16 trades, including plumbers, carpenters, plasterers, electricians, sheet metal workers, laborers and ironworkers.

“Anyone willing to work hard with the goal of finding long-term employment earning a livable wage should consider enrolling in NCCT,” said Jake Meehan, NCCT vice president. “We've trained everyone from the retired grandmother who desired to learn how to fix up her home to ex-convicts seeking a different life. I tell everyone who comes here that it won't be easy, but it will definitely be worth it.”

To enroll in Northern California Construction Training, call (916) 372-7422.
