Drive-By Shooter Agrees to Life Prison Term

Woodland man will serve 30 years-to-life in state prison after pleading no contest

Post Date:05/01/2014 4:43 PM

Press Release

(Woodland, CA) Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig announced that on April 29, 2014, 25-year-old Woodland man Francisco Andres Aldana Nava pled no contest to attempted murder with an enhancement for personal use of a firearm causing great bodily injury. As part of the plea, Nava agreed to 30 years-to-life in state prison.

On August 8, 2012 Nava, a validated Sureno gang member, gunned down a rival Norteno gang member in Woodland near Don’s Diner as retaliation because some Nortenos had thrown a rock through his window earlier in the evening.

When officers arrived they found the victim, an 18-year old validated Norteno gang member, severely injured and lying in the street. Don’s Diner was closed at the time of the shooting, but some employees were still inside when a shot gun blast took out some of the front windows. No one inside was injured.

Witnesses described seeing a mid-90s white Ford Mustang drive up to the victim in the middle of the street. The passenger, later identified as Nava, stuck a shot gun out the window and shot the rival gang member at close range. The Mustang then sped away. The victim was transported to UCD Medical Center.

A few weeks later police located Nava at Beamer Park with other Surenos. Nava had a loaded shot gun and his cell phone. Police reviewed messages on Nava’s phone after obtaining a search warrant. The phone had messages from Nava bragging about shooting the rival gang member in the “Four Corners” a nickname for the area of West Cross and Cottonwood. Police later connected Nava to the white Ford Mustang used in the shooting.

The Yolo Count Gang Task Force and the Woodland Police Department investigated the case.

The Honorable David Reed is scheduled to sentence Nava on June 9, 2014.
