Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – As the importance of early literacy and preparing children for school continues to make headlines, the Yolo County Library joins libraries across the country in April and May by recognizing El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros (Children's Day/Book Day) through various events celebrating reading. Known as Día, this is a celebration of children, families and reading, emphasizing the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

The Yolo County Library will hold Día events showcasing a variety of multicultural programs and services for children and families at the below branch libraries as follows:

April 23, 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., Knights Landing Branch, 42351 Third Street in Knights Landing
April 26, 10:00 a.m. to noon, Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, 315 East 14th Street in Davis
April 26, 10:00 a.m. to noon, South Davis/Montgomery Satellite Branch, 1441 Danbury Street in Davis
April 26, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Arthur F. Turner Community Library, 1212 Merkley Ave. in W. Sacramento
April 30, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Clarksburg Branch Library, 52915 Netherlands Road in Clarksburg
May 1, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., Winters Community Library, 708 Railroad Avenue in Winters
May 3, 10:00 a.m. to noon, Esparto Regional Library, 17065 Yolo Avenue in Esparto

“Libraries are part of the American Dream; places that support family, education, self-help and lifelong learning,” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong. “Through literacy events and programs like Día, we can work with parents and caregivers in our beautifully diverse Yolo County communities to raise avid readers.”

Día is an enhancement of Children’s Day, which began in 1925. Children’s Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, nationally acclaimed children’s book author, Pat Mora, proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy, and thus founded El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros.
