Q: What do I do with empty paint cans, latex paint or other paints?
A: Empty paint cans or cans with hardened paint can be placed in the garbage but first, remove all covers. Yolo County residents can bring latex paint for a convenience fee (PDF) to the YCCL during normal operating hours. All latex paint must be sealed, must not be leaking, must have original labels and be easily identifiable as latex paint. All other paints, stains, etc., must be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Events (free of charge for residents). For more information see "Paint" on the A-Z Waste Acceptability page. |
Q: What do I do with batteries?
A: Household batteries (such as alkaline batteries, nickel cadmium batteries, button batteries from watches) can be recycled at the YCCL, the ECC and at some participating local Longs Drug stores (free of charge). Rechargeable batteries (such as nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium ion (Li-ion), small sealed lead acid), motorcycle batteries and automotive batteries are accepted daily at the YCCL (free of charge). Q: What do I do with fluorescent light bulbs and tubes?
A: The California Department of Toxic Substance Control banned the disposal of fluorescent light bulbs in the trash beginning in February 2006. See "Fluorescent Tubes & Bulbs" on the A-Z Waste Acceptability page. |
Q: Can I bring Asbestos waste to the landfill?

Q: I am a business. Can I participate in the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection day for residents (free of charge)?
A: No. However if your business qualifies as a Small Quantity Generator, you can make an appointment to dispose of business hazardous waste for a fee. |
Q: If I vent the refrigerant out of my appliance can I get a cheaper rate?
A: No. All appliances designed to contain refrigerant are charged the rate in the fee schedule. Each appliance is checked by a certified technician to confirm that all refrigerants and oils are properly removed. Venting refrigerants to the atmosphere is illegal and does not decrease the cost.

Q: What do I do with propane tanks?
A: Empty propane tanks can be disposed of at your local propane gas vendor or Yolo County residents can bring them to the Household Hazardous Waste Events (free of charge). |
Q: I pay taxes in Yolo County. Do I still have to pay when I come to the landfill or convenience center?
A: Yes. The YCCL and ECC are supported by tipping fees from customers and program grants. No tax dollars fund the landfill.

Q: If I see something at the landfill or convenience center that someone else has discarded, may I take it home?
A: No. It is neither safe nor legal to take things from the YCCL or ECC. Permit regulations prohibit scavenging onsite and it can be dangerous.
